100th Anniversary events

Posted on January 27, 2019

This year, North Country Camps will celebrate its 100th summer. Over the course of a century, Lincoln and Whippoorwill have drawn together children and families and connected them with each other and the Adirondacks. Recently, North Country Public Television produced a piece marking this milestone. With the creation of the North Country Camps Foundation last spring, we have a board of directors of alumni dedicated to the continuation of the mission and philosophy of the founders into the next century.
To celebrate this remarkable landmark and all the people who have helped steward camp to the present and into the future, we will be hosting three gatherings:

  • 100 years of Stewardship Dinner: Hackley School on April 6th 2019
  • Camp Summer Celebration: Whip Field on August 24th
  • Fall 46er Weekend: Adirondacks on September 28th and 29th

Each of these events is a chance for us to celebrate camp and the values that it has embodied over the past century. Longer descriptions of the events are included below.
If you have any messages for the Gucker family, other camp leaders or memories of experiences at Lincoln and Whip that you would like to share, please do so here.
If you have questions, email ncc100th@gmail.com.
Sincerely,

Lynn Livingston, Meg Johnson, Art Amler, Betsy Byrne, Neil Coplan, Michael Elbe, Doug Furman, Kate Green, Alice Leighton, Barry Needleman, Alex Rawson, Ginny Ruder, Steve Schneider

CELEBRATIONS

100 Years of Stewardship Dinner
Please join us at the Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY, on April 6, 2019 at 6 p.m., for an event to celebrate camp and the many contributions of the community to its philosophy and mission. Join us for drinks, dinner and fun. We will have a silent auction of camp memorabilia and Adirondack experiences, singing by Wheezers past and present, and toasts to celebrate the stewardship of the Gucker family, past directors, counselors and campers!
Ticket Price: $75 per person. RSVP by March 15, 2019.
Note: This event will be the only one to incorporate a fundraising component. If you would like to make an additional tax-exempt contribution, you can do so through the Foundation website.
The event will be capped at 200 people and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. A block of hotel rooms are being held until March 5, 2019, at the Westchester Marriott, 670 White Plains Road, Tarrytown, NY; Call  1-914-631-2200 and ask for the special NCCF 100th Anniversary rate. There are, of course, other options in Tarrytown.

Camp Summer Celebration
On August 24th we welcome you to join us for an end-of-summer party to celebrate camp’s 100th season at its home in the Adirondacks. With food trucks, music and dancing on the Whip Field, this Saturday evening celebration is a chance to reconnect with camp friends at this special place on Augur Lake. On Saturday, although there will be no camp-led activities during the day, you can hike (a maximum of 15 per group in the High Peaks) or explore local areas (Ausable Chasm, Lake Placid, Pt. Douglas Beach, Noonmark Diner, etc.) with friends. We invite anyone who wishes to organize an activity (knitting, antiquing, golfing, etc.) for others to join to let us know.
We can provide information about local B&B’s and motels. If you do not have access to other accommodations, let us know and we can make Camp cabins available on Friday and Saturday nights. Please note however that this is not a traditional “Oldtimers Weekend,” which will resume its regular bi-annual schedule in 2020.  The boats and equipment will be put away, and we will not be running activities on Saturday and Sunday.  Camp will provide dinner at Saturday night’s celebration and a simple bagel breakfast on Sunday morning for those who do stay at Camp. Otherwise folks are on their own for meals and can explore some of the great spots around the Keeseville area (recommendations to follow).  Gather, celebrate and enjoy the Adirondacks!
We will share more information about and open registration for this event in the spring, and we hope in the meantime you will save the date and we look forward to seeing all of you there!

Fall 46er Weekend
On September 28-29, 2019, come up to the Adirondacks and help us celebrate our connection to the mountains as we try to get someone from North Country Camps on each of the 46 High Peaks over the course of the two day weekend. Most of these trips will be self-guided, so gather a group (not to exceed 15!) and pick one or more peaks to climb.  Email Barry Needleman at bneedleman@comcast.net to sign up for peaks or if you have any questions. Later in the spring we will post a list of who is climbing which peaks on the Foundation web page. We expect that NCCF will provide leadership for a few hikes (we’ll let you know more as the time approaches). Camp facilities will not be available this weekend so you’re on your own for food and lodging.  However, if you’re not camped somewhere in the backcountry, we hope to have some type of gathering somewhere on Saturday night to share stories and carbo-load for the next day’s hikes.
